I have been fortunate to travel with work, family or socially to various parts of Africa, where I have been exposed to the inequalities that much of the continent suffer.
I am passionate about social mobility, even on a global scale and proud to be
part of the B2P-2023 project that will begin to address some of the issues,
namely: access to education, improved healthcare and increasing trade
opportunities, in this one location.
It is a credit to the selection
process that we can once again form such a capable and diverse team, a
microcosm of our current businesses, which will reflect well on 21st
Century UK engineering and project management. More than just a legacy,
my objective is to ensure the bridge provides the catalyst for community
development and growth and a small step to addressing the obvious injustice,
hence I plan to follow the impact the bridge [and others] has on this community
and contribution to the long-term development of Rwanda.
With every presentation of our forthcoming project, the message of hope Bridges
to Prosperity conveys remains undiminished and continues to attracts interest
and support – a testament to a compassionate and caring side of people that is
often less visible as we are swept along in the pace of modern life.
Preparing for this years trip
remains a challenge, working as I do in a senior role on a large project and
only thanks to the support of my family and colleagues can my participation and
contribution to this year’s trip be possible, it was so lovely that my young
children entered the logo competition – It was probably easier that none of
them won!
My friends have taken an avid interest in the project and supporting
fundraising, in particular the sponsored 77km River Thames bridge walk inspired
by my wife Michaela, donations contributing to the current 75% of our £20K
target, which with more than a month to go shows how focussed the team
is.
Phase 1; the launch, organisation and fundraising is in a great place, enabling
increased focus on phase 2, planning the engineering & safety, logistics
and community engagement as well as getting to know the team and all our
foibles. I’m looking forward to playing my part to ensure phase 3 the
build is the success we aspire it be.
